Joakim Gullstrand is the Dean of the Lund University School of Economics and Management (LUSEM) and a Professor of International Economics at Lund University. He assumed the Deanship in January 2024, with responsibility for the school’s strategic development, quality assurance in research and education, and strengthening engagement with corporate and external partners.
Joakim has been a Professor of International Economics since 2013 and an External Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham’s Globalisation and Economic Policy Centre (GEP) since 2003. Prior to his current role, he served as Head of the Department of Economics at Lund University (2020–2023) and held a range of leadership and governance assignments, including membership of the faculty board.
Earlier, Joakim was a Senior Researcher at the AgriFood Economics Centre (2009–2011) and at the Swedish Institute for Food and Agricultural Economics (2001–2009), and he served as Deputy Academic Director at TRAPCA (2007–2019). He has also held external board roles, including as a board member of Mistra Biotech (2012–2020).
His research focuses on the interplay between firms and international markets, particularly how firms build internationalisation through exports and imports, and how trade affects individuals, companies, and regions, with additional work on the food chain, including biodiversity, productivity, competitiveness, labour mobility, and regional growth.
