Prior to her current role, Maria was vice Dean responsible for education at the faculty of Medicine (2018-2023).

Maria Björkqvist is professor in Pharmacology since 2017 and research group leader for The Brain disease Biomarker unit. Her research group focuses on approaching Huntington´s disease (HD) from what happens in the body and further how this affects brain pathology, how this could translate into biomarker possibilities and how this could potentially lead to therapeutic avenues. With the underlying hypothesis that HD immune alterations contribute to HD central and peripheral pathology, Maria Björkqvist and her team now focuses on peripheral – central immune cross-talk.
